Plant safety guide
Is Poinsettia safe for pets?
Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is listed here as a Toxic plant for dogs and cats. Poinsettia is usually associated with mild mouth or stomach irritation rather than the severe toxicity many people fear, but pets should still not chew it.
Symptoms to watch for
- drooling
- mouth irritation
- vomiting
- skin irritation
Symptoms can vary by pet size, amount eaten, plant part, and individual sensitivity. When in doubt, use the emergency guidance rather than waiting.
What to do if your pet ate it
Remove access, rinse any sap from skin or fur, and call a veterinarian if vomiting, mouth irritation, or unusual behavior develops.
For urgent concerns, call your veterinarian, ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435, or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661. Fees may apply.
Safer plant alternatives
