Is Money Tree Safe for Cats and Dogs?

Pachira aquatica

Money tree is commonly treated as a pet-safe indoor tree choice. It is different from jade plant, which is toxic to dogs and cats and is sometimes also called money plant.

Generally listed as non-toxic to dogs and cats

Dog and cat safety

Money Tree is a safer houseplant choice for many pet homes because it is commonly listed as non-toxic to dogs and cats. That does not mean it should be treated as pet food. Repeated chewing can still damage the plant, upset a sensitive stomach, or expose pets to soil, fertilizer, or pest treatments.

Safe does not mean chew-proof

Even non-toxic plants can cause mild vomiting or digestive upset if a pet eats a large amount. Move the plant out of reach if your pet keeps chewing it, and call your veterinarian if your pet seems ill, vomits repeatedly, becomes lethargic, or may have eaten soil additives or pesticides.

Care notes

Give money tree bright indirect light and water when the top soil dries. Avoid letting the pot sit in water.

Pet-home placement tips

Use a heavy pot for braided-trunk plants so pets cannot tip the plant during play.
