Plant safety guide
Is Asparagus Fern safe for pets?
Asparagus Fern (Asparagus aethiopicus) is listed here as a Toxic plant for dogs, cats, and rabbits. Asparagus fern is not a true fern. The berries are the main concern, and repeated contact can also irritate skin.
Symptoms to watch for
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- abdominal discomfort
- skin irritation
Symptoms can vary by pet size, amount eaten, plant part, and individual sensitivity. When in doubt, use the emergency guidance rather than waiting.
What to do if your pet ate it
Remove dropped berries and plant pieces, wash irritated skin if needed, and call a veterinarian if berries were eaten or symptoms develop.
For urgent concerns, call your veterinarian, ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435, or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661. Fees may apply.
