Maranta and related prayer plants

Prayer plant is generally listed as non-toxic to dogs and cats and is a good pet-safe alternative to many toxic aroid plants.

Generally listed as non-toxic to dogs and cats

Dog and cat safety

Prayer Plant is a safer houseplant choice for many pet homes because it is commonly listed as non-toxic to dogs and cats. That does not mean it should be treated as pet food. Repeated chewing can still damage the plant, upset a sensitive stomach, or expose pets to soil, fertilizer, or pest treatments.

Safe does not mean chew-proof

Even non-toxic plants can cause mild vomiting or digestive upset if a pet eats a large amount. Move the plant out of reach if your pet keeps chewing it, and call your veterinarian if your pet seems ill, vomits repeatedly, becomes lethargic, or may have eaten soil additives or pesticides.

Care notes

Use indirect light, moderate humidity, and evenly moist soil. Leaves may curl when the plant is too dry.

Pet-home placement tips

Keep trailing stems away from playful cats and trim damaged leaves to discourage chewing.
